Who missed me?

Lily! I’ve missed you! Where’ve you been?

Had to run home for a few days, mum’s been really ill and dad was getting a bit worried. Turned out not to be much of anything though, thankfully.

Another Year║ Lily & Severus

severus-snape-prince:

Severus looked away from Lily for a moment. This encounter was proving to be quite the challenge for him. He needed to stay strong, he had to stick it out until the end. There was no way that he was going to show her that he was weakening in resolve. Her stance was enough to tell him how she felt about what was happening. She was hugging herself in what he assumed to be a protective manner.

“A follower? You’re one to talk. Aren’t you doing the exact same thing?”

He let out a light chuckle. How could she possibly tell him not to be a follower when all she had been doing was following in the steps of her friends. She was being hypocritical and that was not going over well with him.

“We’re on the opposite sides of a growing conflict. We’re both followers, Evans. Your precious leader is Dumbledore and mine is the one you’ve learned to fear.”

Judging by the reaction of his words, Severus could tell that she had filled in the missing word to be mudblood. His gaze locked on hers and though he hesitated the word did not leave his mouth. Instead Severus took half a step towards her, he wasn’t going to hurt her. He would never hurt her.

Lily had to force herself not to flinch back from Severus when he took a step towards her. It wasn’t a particularly threatening gesture, and it was barely a shift from his position of a moment earlier, but it was completely unexpected. They had been standing a good distance apart, and she felt that the space between them gave her a little more perspective and prevented her from doing one of two things: slapping him with the full force she could muster or throwing her arms around the back of his neck and hugging him tightly. The urge to do both were equally strong and she was grateful that the few feet that separated them prevented her from doing one or the other. And then he moved closer just slightly.

“I don’t follow anyone,” she hissed out, feeling her guard come up, her defensive impulse kick in as it so often did when she felt challenged. “I’m not a sheep. I have my beliefs and principles and they happen to coincide with Dumbledore’s, who in turn opposes your precious leader and his campaign of intolerance and hate. He is an example of reason and logic and peace and equality and those are standards I uphold.” Lily could hear the warning bells screaming in her head and knew that broaching this conversation and having a topic such as this with Severus would not end well. “The conflict that separates us grows because there are people like you who adhere to a creed without question. You engage in intimidation and violence which only widens the gap and eliminates any chance for peaceful resolution or discourse.”

It was her turn now to take a small step forward, more for emphasis than anything, and now there was less than a foot between them and she stared deeply into Severus’ dark eyes, which now seemed hollow and empty, cold as the stone walls of the castle. “But know this,” she said carefully, her hands tightly balled at her sides as she leaned in, her voice tight and quiet now. “I’m not afraid of your leader. And I never will be.”

Another Year║ Lily & Severus

severus-snape-prince:

Severus watched the change of emotions that seemed to go through Lily. If she could only imagine that a similar spectrum was running through him. In the deepest part of him, he knew that he missed her. He wished that what had happened hadn’t and that they were still okay. Her fighting back to him now only helped him out a little with disliking her… but only just a little.

“We both know that in gossip there is a small remnant of truth.”

He wouldn’t address her by her name anymore simply because it hurt to say it. Yes, he was still hurting and he was doing his best to hide it. He wondered if he had actually gotten good enough to fool the person who he had called his best friend for years on end. Had she really been able to forget just how much he cares for her? Was his feeling for her that miniscule to her?

“You should watch who you talk to. Blood traitors aren’t that much better than -“

He stopped himself sure that she could fill in the gap of what he had been about to say. He had only used it once when referring to her and he was going to keep it that was as long as he could.

Lily gritted her teeth and hugged her arms closer to her body, glaring back at Severus, who had fixed her with a steely, cold stare. The difference that a year could make was striking and it made Lily a bit ill to consider just how much things had changed between them. An entire summer had gone by with them avoiding one another, complicated by the fact they lived so nearby. Being forced to pretend that she didn’t see him or notice him…or miss him…had been excruciating. But it was nothing compared to how she felt now that they were only inches apart and speaking, however awkwardly. This was the first interaction they’d had in months, and whatever hope Lily had held out that things would somehow fix themselves was quickly disappearing.

“That’s bollocks and you know it. Don’t be a blind follower, Severus.” Her words were heavy with meaning and she hoped he caught on to what she was actually trying to say. “Only small-minded people talk about other people. The one truth Rita knows about me is the colour of my hair.”

She looked at him evenly, despite the fact that her heart was beating painfully in her chest and she rather felt like crying as she was faced with his unmoving, heartless expression. Even though they hadn’t spoken in so long, nothing could erase a childhood’s worth of memories and experience, and she was all too familiar with the way he closed himself off and acting passive and disinterested. It was a common reaction for him when faced with something he felt ill-equipped to handle and it stung to know he was now employing it on her. Biting her lip, she fought the urge to take him in her arms and comfort him as she used to, instead wondering why years of friendship could vanish so easily.

And then, again, he uttered words that froze up the drop of sympathy that had begun to form. She gasped sharply and held her body rigidly, blinking at him in disbelief.  Lily closed her eyes briefly, tightening her arms and taking a deep breath, trying to gather herself mentally as the bite of his unspoken words rattled around in her brain. Stopping just short of saying it was almost as bad as uttering it in the first place…because it just went to show that he really did think that way and he was taunting her with his hate. “Better than what, Severus?” she asked bitingly, opening her eyes and glowering at him. “Why not finish that sentence? You’ve already said it to me once.”

Now Evans, that’s no way to talk about Sirius.

Peas in a pod, Potter.

Is that even a question? I have a perpetual sweet tooth!

EMMY! How are you?

Another Year║ Lily & Severus

severus-snape-prince:

Severus was well aware of the diminishing amount of students roaming about the corridors. He was sure that he would near the staircase that would lead him down towards his destination at any moment so he continued to walk. He continued to let his thoughts roam about towards anything and everything that didn’t have to do with Lily Evans. Currently he was recounting the ingredients needed to make an Angle’s trumpet draught, a draught he had concocted in secrecy the prior year. The echoing of his footsteps was his companion and for a brief moment he looked up from the ground. Regret filled him instantly. Lily Evans stood in the same corridor as him, more importantly she was closer to him now than she had been the entire summer. He paused for a moment and nearly smiled at her.

It seemed that he had forgotten what he had occurred for the briefest of moments and only barely managed to catch himself. She was nothing but his ex-best friend now. She was nothing to him and would continue to be nothing. He had to treat her the way that he had treated other witches and wizards of her blood status; she was after all one of them. A wicked smile tugged at his lips and he reluctantly allowed it to overcome him. He began walking once more and stopped only when he was directly across from her. As to why he had stopped there, he had no idea. Shouldn’t he just walk away and be done with seeing her? Apparently not.

“Lily Evans.”

His tone held no sign of the endearment that he had given to her the prior years. It was cold and almost challenging. He kept his potions book in his hand and quickly examined the way she looked, he assumed that she was heading in the same direction that he was. How cruel fate was to him. She was so close but world’s away from him. He turned to look over towards the corridor before looking back towards her. He had to say something to her; he couldn’t simply leave it at just saying her name.

“How’s Potter? “

It nearly killed him to ask about the prat that had made his life increasingly miserable every year. The thought of someone as pure as Lily with Potter disgusted him all together. Then again it was just a rumor that she was giving in to him. But, could there be truth behind the rumor? He prayed that it was all a lie.

Lily couldn’t do anything but blink when Severus looked up at her and their eyes met across the corridor. Her heart expanded instantly and her instinct was to drop her books and run up to him and hug him like she used to, as if nothing had happened over the past year. The impulse was so strong that her lips actually twitched upwards just briefly before the reality of the situation set in and she bit her lip fiercely to dispel the urge. Balling her fists at her sides, she stayed perfectly still and watched him approach, feeling confused by the twisted smirk that crossed his face. It wasn’t a friendly grin at all, but seemed completely malicious and dark. Her eyes followed his progress and she remained silent, the sound of his footsteps in the empty hallway the only thing breaking the tension between them.

When he stopped in front of her, she searched his face desperately for some remnants of the boy she used to know and was sorely disappointed. His dark eyes seemed hollow and wicked and there was no trace of friendliness or any sort of affection in his expression. Even the way her name fell from his lips seemed foreign and stilted and she swallowed heavily, ill at ease with the sensation of being inches away from somebody and at the same time, worlds away. The way he looked at her now was the same way the Blacks did, or the Malfoys or any other pureblood fanatical students who roamed the hallways. Usually she didn’t mind, simply brushing it off as ignorance, unfazed by the opinions of those who weren’t her friends, but this was different…perhaps because for so long, Severus had been her friend. Her closest friend. And now he saw her as an enemy.

“Sev..erus,” she said quietly, quickly adjusting the nickname that fell so naturally from her lips. The intensity of the hatred in his gaze made her glance away, uncomfortable and intimidated. But her uneasiness dissipated when he mentioned Potter, his tone heavy with connotations and disgust. She whipped her head back towards him and narrowed her eyes, crossing her arms in front of her chest defensively and shook her hair back somewhat as she jutted out her chin. “I wouldn’t know,” came her biting reply, her eyes challenging now instead of skittish and hesitant. “I haven’t spoken to him at all yet, not that I should have to justify who I associate with to you.” Her heart felt as though it was in her throat and she struggled to keep her voice even and her head clear. “Perhaps,” she snapped, “you shouldn’t put quite so much store into idle gossip.”

And suddenly it all makes sense.

You know, Evans. I hear the 70’s are progressive. You’re welcome to be a part of this love affair of ours.

I wasn’t aware “progressive” was somehow a synonym for “barking mad”.
